Hi, I’m Dr. V. Preethi, I’m a General and Laparoscopic Surgeon at Hayagriva Hospital in Chennai. If you've discovered a small, painless lump beneath your skin—especially on areas like your face, scalp, or lower back—it’s completely natural to feel uncertain or even anxious about what it might be. Many of my patients initially assume the worst or simply ignore the issue until it grows larger or starts interfering with their daily life. In most of these cases, the diagnosis turns out to be a dermoid cyst—a benign (non-cancerous), slow-growing growth that forms during early development.
While dermoid cysts are usually harmless, they can occasionally lead to infection, discomfort, or aesthetic concerns, particularly when they’re located in visible or sensitive areas. Even if the cyst doesn't cause pain, its presence can affect your confidence, mobility, or overall peace of mind.
That’s where I step in—not just to treat the cyst, but to guide you through every stage of care with clarity and compassion. From an accurate diagnosis to a safe and minimally invasive surgical removal, my approach is centered around your comfort, safety, and long-term well-being.
You’ll never feel rushed or left in the dark. Together, we’ll develop a personalized treatment plan that meets both your medical needs and emotional comfort—ensuring you walk away from the experience feeling confident, cared for, and free from worry.
A dermoid cyst is a benign (non-cancerous), sac-like growth that forms during fetal development when skin and tissue cells become trapped in areas where they shouldn't be. Unlike typical cysts that are filled with fluid, dermoid cysts are unique because they can contain a variety of mature tissues—including skin, hair follicles, sweat glands, and in rare cases, even teeth, bone, or cartilage. These components are a result of the cyst originating from embryonic cells meant to form the outer layers of the skin.
Dermoid cysts are most commonly found in the face (especially near the eyes), scalp, neck, and lower back or spine, but they can occur almost anywhere on the body—including the ovaries or inside the skull. While most dermoid cysts are congenital (present at birth), they often remain undetected for years, only becoming noticeable as they grow in size or begin to interfere with normal body function or appearance.
Although generally harmless, dermoid cysts do not shrink or disappear on their own. Over time, they may increase in size, press on nearby structures, become painful, or develop infections, especially if ruptured. In some cases, they may also cause neurological or cosmetic issues, depending on their location.
For these reasons, surgical removal is typically recommended—even for cysts that are not currently causing symptoms. The procedure is usually straightforward and minimally invasive, offering both functional relief and cosmetic improvement, while eliminating the risk of future complications.
Not all dermoid cysts cause discomfort, which is why some go undiagnosed for years. The most noticeable symptom is a firm, painless lump beneath the skin that often feels rubbery to the touch. The overlying skin typically appears normal, but the lump may increase in size over time.
However, symptoms can escalate if the cyst becomes infected or is located in a sensitive area. Pain, swelling, redness, or discharge might occur, and in some cases, the cyst can interfere with movement or cause pressure in nearby tissues—especially if located near the eye or spine.
Dermoid cyst removal is generally recommended when the lump becomes noticeable, symptomatic, or cosmetically concerning. Surgery may also be advised if there’s a risk of infection, rupture, or functional impairment due to its location.
Even if the cyst isn’t causing immediate issues, proactive removal is often preferred to prevent complications down the line. As the cyst won’t disappear on its own, surgical excision ensures permanent relief with minimal recurrence when done correctly.
I believe that accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment. During your consultation, I will perform a detailed physical examination and may recommend imaging tests such as ultrasound or MRI to assess the depth and nature of the cyst. In uncommon situations, a small tissue sample may be tested to confirm the diagnosis and exclude any other underlying conditions.
My surgical approach is precise, minimally invasive, and focused on preserving surrounding tissues and cosmetic appearance—especially for facial or scalp cysts. I use fine suturing techniques to ensure minimal scarring and a smooth recovery. Follow-up care after surgery is essential to track healing progress and reduce the risk of the condition returning.
With years of surgical experience and a patient-first approach, I’ve helped hundreds of individuals regain their comfort and confidence through safe and effective cyst removal procedures. At Hayagriva Hospital, I ensure that every patient receives personalized attention and clarity at each step of their journey.
